Map how Chinese frontier AI actors (regulators, AI companies, scholars) discuss loss of control over advanced AI systems, assess how seriously they treat this possibility, and how it has evolved over time.
About the project
Whether international coordination on frontier AI risks is feasible depends heavily on how Chinese actors conceptualize loss of control.
This project will produce a policy brief documenting: (i) concrete instances where Chinese companies, scholars, standards bodies, and regulators mention loss of control (see https://concordia-ai.com/research/state-of-ai-safety-in-china-2026), to avoid second-hand claims; (ii) what these actors actually mean by "loss of control"; (iii) whether total loss of control is treated as a credible scenario; (iv) apparent willingness to act on the matter.
Theory of change
French institutions we advise currently lack an evidence-based picture of Chinese positions on large-scale AI risk, which distorts strategic considerations. This brief would directly inform how to pursue international dialogues on loss of control.
Your role
Mentees will build the source corpus (Chinese-language primary sources where possible, plus secondary literature), systematically analyze mentions, and co-draft the brief. Mentees will have autonomy on corpus construction and analysis, then iterate with us on interpretation and policy framing.
Prerequisites
- Familiarity with AI safety concepts (alignment, loss of control, etc.).
- Strong preference for French fluency, as final policy deliverables are written directly in French. Bonus: ability to read Chinese-language sources.

About the mentors

Jérémy Andréoletti is Head of Research at the General-Purpose AI Policy Lab, where he works on risk modeling, forecasting, and governance for advanced AI systems. He completed a PhD at ENS-PSL on macroevolutionary Bayesian modeling and co-founded EffiSciences to support students and researchers interested in high-impact work (AI Safety, biosecurity).

After graduating in physics from EPFL in Switzerland, Antoine is now an AI Security Researcher at General-Purpose AI Policy Lab, a French research organization specializing in security and international coordination challenges posed by frontier AI models' development. His research focuses on foundational arguments for loss of control scenarios and on identifying concrete approaches to prevent them.
