Update the AI Safety Fieldmap

Generalist AI strategy

Update the AI Safety Fieldmap with accurate information on organizations, FTEs, budgets, funding, and data gaps as of September 2026.

About the project

Many efforts to map the AI safety field exist, such as mapping-ai.org. The AI Safety Fieldmap (https://harrywaterman.com/fieldmap/) focuses on quantitative information, including the number of FTEs working at different organizations, but currently has outdated figures for FTEs, existing organizations, and potentially funding from major grantmakers.

Mentees will collect data on organizations, FTEs, and budgets, estimate non-public information, update grant data using sources including grantmaking.ai, clean up the text, and expand the fieldmap into an independent page. The project may also add a biosecurity fieldmap.

Theory of change

Accurate maps of the field help people understand funding dynamics, think quantitatively about opportunities, and make better decisions about funding, hiring, and field-building.

Your role

Mentees will collect data on organizations, FTEs, and budgets, estimate non-public information, update grant data using sources including grantmaking.ai, clean up the text, and expand the fieldmap into an independent page. The project may also add a biosecurity fieldmap.

Prerequisites

Context on the AI safety field and different organizations. Completing a BlueDot course is sufficient. Mentees should also be comfortable using coding agents or willing to learn.

Application question(s)

What experience do you have researching AI safety organizations, funding, or field-building?

How would you estimate information such as organizational budgets or FTEs when it is not publicly available?
